green-notebook cover

This notebook cover was created using specialist disperse dyes. I first applied washes of dye colour to thin paper and left it to dry. Next I laid some small ferns onto the chosen fabric then laid the dyed paper colour side down over the ferns and ironed the back of the paper with a domestic iron to heat transfer the colour from the paper to the fabric. The ferns act as a resist, leaving the shape of the ferns on the fabric surrounded by the transfer colour. However the dye also colours the back of the ferns as well as the fabric so for the next stage, I flip over the ferns and place them, colour side down onto another piece of fabric and then lay a second dye sheet in a different colour over the top and iron again, creating the image shown. The design is then completed with some free machine embroidery
